Wix alternatives
Self-hosted WordPress suits owners who want control and a big ecosystem, a custom website suits businesses competing hard on speed and search, and Squarespace suits anyone who just wants a tidier editor. Webflow fits teams with a designer, and Shopify fits anyone whose Wix store has become the main event.
Not sure which fits? Send me your site and I’ll tell you honestly.
If staying on Wix is the right call, I’ll say so. Free, from me.
Why people leave Wix
The site can’t leave
Wix lets you take some content with you, but not the pages or the design. Owners often realise this only when they want to switch, and it turns a move into a rebuild.
Pages can feel heavy on phones
Wix has improved a lot. In my experience its pages still tend to carry more script than a lean build, and in a competitive local market, mobile speed is one of the factors that can separate you from the business ranked above you.
Freeform layouts need checking on every screen
The drag-anywhere canvas is lovely on the screen you built it on. On a tablet or a narrow phone, elements can overlap or stack in ways you didn’t intend, and adjusting each breakpoint by hand takes time.
Apps add up
Bookings, reviews, pop-ups and forms often come from separate apps, each with its own fee and its own script. The site slowly gets heavier and dearer at the same time.
What to look for in a replacement
A real exit door
Having been locked in once, pick something you can leave: open-source software, exportable code, or at least clean content export.
A replacement for every Wix app
List what Wix Bookings, Wix Forms or Wix Stores actually do for you today. The new platform needs an answer for each, built in or integrated.
Layouts that respond, not just resize
Look for a platform or build where pages reflow properly at every width, so you’re not maintaining what is effectively a separate mobile site.
The alternatives, ranked
Ranked for a typical small business leaving this platform. Your best fit depends on what you’re leaving for.
- WordPressOpen-source CMS
Best for owners who want to own the software and choose from a huge pool of developers. Budget time or help for updates, because that job moves from Wix to you.
Wix vs WordPress, compared - Custom websiteHand-built
Best for established service businesses where speed and search decide who gets the call. You trade the editor’s freedom for a faster, cleaner site you own outright.
Wix vs Custom website, compared - SquarespaceWebsite builder
Best if you liked editing Wix yourself and mainly want a calmer editor and more consistent layouts. It’s also hard to leave, though it exports a little more content than Wix, so go in knowing that.
Wix vs Squarespace, compared - WebflowVisual development platform
Best for a business with an in-house or contract designer who understands web layout. In anyone else’s hands, the learning curve tends to win.
Wix vs Webflow, compared - ShopifyE-commerce platform
Best when the Wix store has outgrown the rest of the site. If online sales are the main job now, a commerce platform should run them.

How they stack up
Against Wix, on the factors people usually leave over. Ratings are my own assessment for a typical small business, as of October 2026. Platforms change their features and plans often, so check the vendor’s current documentation before you decide.

When to stay on Wix
If you edit the site often, your market isn’t crowded, and Wix Bookings runs your calendar without complaint, staying is reasonable. Wix’s SEO tools are better than its reputation, so tidy your title tags, compress your images and give it another year before paying for a move. A rebuild should fix a real problem, not a vague feeling.
Migration checklist
What to do, in order, when you leave Wix.
Crawl and list every URL
Export your sitemap and record every live page, including blog posts under /post/ and any store pages under /product-page/. Those Wix patterns won’t exist on the new platform, so each one needs a destination.
Export what Wix lets you take
Download contacts, form submissions and store products as CSV where your plan allows. Save blog posts and images too. Anything Wix won’t export, copy by hand before you cancel.
Rebuild bookings and forms first
If you use Wix Bookings, set up the replacement scheduler and move upcoming appointments before launch, so no client is booked into a calendar you’re about to close.
Map 301 redirects
Pair each old Wix URL with its new address and set up permanent 301 redirects on the new host. Blog posts and service pages with backlinks matter most.
Check email before touching DNS
If your email runs through Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, note the MX and verification records. Change only the records that point the website, not the ones that deliver mail.
Move or repoint the domain
A domain bought through Wix can be transferred to another registrar once any transfer lock has passed. You can also leave it there and simply point it at the new site.
Watch Search Console after launch
Submit the new sitemap and check for crawl errors over the next few weeks. Fix any 404 that shows up from an old Wix URL you missed.
Leaving Wix, answered
Not as a working site. Some data exports as CSV, and blog posts and images can be moved with a migration tool or by hand, but the pages and design have to be rebuilt on WordPress.
Almost certainly. Wix puts posts under /post/, which most other platforms don’t use. Redirect each old post URL to its new address so links and rankings carry over.
Export your contacts and recreate services and availability in the new booking tool. Move upcoming appointments before you switch, then keep the Wix account open until the last one has passed.
