Is Wix bad for SEO?

Short answerNo, not anymore for the basics. Wix lets you edit titles, descriptions, URLs and redirects, and its pages can be indexed and rank. Where it limits you is speed, fine control over code and structured data, and portability, since you can’t export a Wix site. For competitive local searches those limits can start to matter.

What Wix gets right

Wix has improved a lot over the years. You can set a title tag and meta description for each page, customise most URLs, add 301 redirects, connect Google Search Console and generate an XML sitemap automatically. For a small business that publishes useful pages and keeps its Google Business Profile in shape, a Wix site can rank for its name and local services.

Its old reputation came from years when Wix sites were harder for search engines to read. That’s largely outdated, though the reputation has stuck around.

Where it still holds you back

  • Speed. Wix pages can carry more JavaScript than a hand-built page, which can make Core Web Vitals harder to pass on mid-range phones.
  • Control. You work within the editor’s output. Fine-tuning markup, heading structure or schema beyond what Wix offers is limited.
  • Portability. There’s no full export. Leaving means rebuilding, which is a form of lock-in.

None of these stop a site ranking outright. They mostly matter at the margins, when you and a competitor have similar content and reviews and the faster, better-structured page gets the edge.

Is the platform your real problem?

Usually, a Wix site that doesn’t rank has content problems first: one page for all services, thin copy, no reviews, no location signals. Fix those before blaming the platform. If you’ve done that and you’re still behind faster, better-structured competitors, that’s when moving makes sense. The custom website vs Wix comparison covers the trade-offs in more detail.

Before deciding, check Search Console for indexing errors and look at which pages actually get impressions. That tells you whether Google is ignoring the site or simply preferring other pages for your searches.

What I’d do

Nick Lovett, founder of Tavro

If you bring me a Wix site that isn’t ranking, I won’t tell you to leave Wix straight away. I’d check whether each service has its own page, whether titles describe what you do and where, and whether Search Console shows indexing problems. Often those fixes alone help. If the business depends on search and the competition is strong, I’d then talk about a faster custom build you own. But plenty of owners do fine on Wix, and I’d say so.

FAQ

Follow-up questions

  1. Yes. Plenty do, especially for local or less competitive searches. Content and relevance matter more than the platform.

  2. It can. Wix pages often load more scripts than a hand-built site, which makes good mobile scores harder to reach.

  3. Not as a working site. You can copy content out, but moving platforms means rebuilding the design and pages.
