Custom website vs Wix
Wix is genuinely good for an owner who wants to build and edit a site themselves, especially with bookings built in. A custom website can be the better choice when mobile speed, technical SEO and owning your site are deciding factors, which is usually once a business is established in a competitive market.

Side by side
Ratings are my own assessment for a typical small business, as of October 2026. Platforms change their features and plans often, so check the vendor’s current documentation before you decide.
| Custom website | Wix | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Designed from a blank page and hand-coded for one business. | The all-in-one drag-and-drop builder with an app for everything. |
| Ownership and portability | Fully yoursIf the contract assigns it to you, the code, design and domain are yours. Any developer can pick it up. | Platform-onlyYour content is yours, and some data exports as CSV, but the site itself can’t leave Wix. |
| SEO control | ExtensiveTags, URLs, redirects and schema are all under your control. Rankings still depend on content and links. | StrongTitles, redirects, robots.txt and custom structured data are all editable. |
| AI-search readiness | StrongPrerendered HTML and structured data can be built in from day one. Citations still depend on content. | GoodPages are server-rendered and some page types get structured data automatically; custom markup is possible. |
| Performance | StrongCan ship only the code each page needs. Fast if built well, slow if not. | VariesMuch improved, though in my testing mobile pages often carry more script than lean sites. |
| Design freedom | UnlimitedNo template ceiling. The brand and budget set the limits. | FlexibleFreeform canvas; Wix Studio adds more responsive control. |
| E-commerce | GoodCustom storefronts are possible; often paired with Shopify for checkout. | GoodGood for small catalogues and bookings. |
| Maintenance burden | MinimalA static site has no plugins or database to patch, though dependencies and the domain still need care. | MinimalWix handles hosting, updates and security. |
| Learning curve | GentleYou don’t build it. Editing depends on whether a CMS is included. | EasyDrag, drop, publish. |
| Pricing model | A project fee up front, then optional ongoing care. Static hosting itself tends to cost very little. | Monthly or yearly subscription. Paid plans remove Wix ads and connect your domain; some apps add their own fees. |
| Day-to-day editing | Text and images through a simple CMS if one is set up, otherwise a quick request to the developer. | The Wix editor in the browser, or the Wix app on a phone. |
Which one suits you
Choose Custom website if…
- your competitors are close and speed or structure could tip the balance
- you want to be able to move the site to another host or developer
- your brand needs a design that holds up on every screen size
Choose Wix if…
- you want to edit everything yourself, any time
- you need bookings, a small store or forms with no developer
- you’re early and testing an offer
The difference that matters most
A Wix site can’t be exported to another host. That matters more than any feature difference, because everything you build there stays there. For an early-stage personal trainer that’s an acceptable trade for ease. For a physiotherapy clinic with three locations and years of reviews, it’s a long-term risk.
Speed can be another gap. Wix has improved a lot, but in my experience its pages tend to carry more script than a lean build, and Core Web Vitals are one place a well-built custom site can pull ahead.
Where each one leads
Counted from my ratings in the table above.
Custom website leads on ownership and portability, seo control, ai-search readiness, performance and design freedom.
Wix leads on learning curve.
Best fit for Custom website: established businesses whose website has to win work in a competitive market. Best fit for Wix: owners who want to build and edit a site themselves, quickly.
Switching between them
Moving off Wix means rebuilding the design; some data exports as CSV and blog posts can be moved with a migration tool, but the pages can’t. Wix URLs use their own patterns, like /post/, so map them carefully and redirect each one. The full process is in how to move from Wix to a custom site.
Custom website vs Wix, answered
No. Titles, redirects, robots.txt and custom structured data are all editable. In my view, page weight on mobile is where it can trail a lean build.
Not directly, since Wix apps run inside Wix. A custom site would use a standalone booking tool like the ones many clinics already use.
Custom website gives you more SEO control. Custom website: Tags, URLs, redirects and schema are all under your control. Rankings still depend on content and links. Wix: Titles, redirects, robots.txt and custom structured data are all editable.
Custom website (fully yours): Everything, provided your contract gives you the code. The way I work, it lives in a repository you own. Wix (platform-only): Contacts, store products and CMS collections export as CSV; blog posts usually move with a migration tool or by hand. The design and pages have to be rebuilt.
