Custom website vs HubSpot CMS
If your sales and marketing already run in HubSpot and the team builds landing pages every week, HubSpot CMS earns its subscription. If you don’t live in HubSpot, a custom website gives you speed and ownership without the software bill, and it can still send form leads into a CRM.

Side by side
Ratings are my own assessment for a typical small business, as of October 2026. Platforms change their features and plans often, so check the vendor’s current documentation before you decide.
| Custom website | HubSpot CMS | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Designed from a blank page and hand-coded for one business. | A CMS wired into HubSpot’s CRM, for teams already living in HubSpot. |
| Ownership and portability | Fully yoursIf the contract assigns it to you, the code, design and domain are yours. Any developer can pick it up. | PartialContent exports; templates are HubSpot-only. |
| SEO control | ExtensiveTags, URLs, redirects and schema are all under your control. Rankings still depend on content and links. | StrongSolid controls and guidance. |
| AI-search readiness | StrongPrerendered HTML and structured data can be built in from day one. Citations still depend on content. | GoodServer-rendered pages; schema through modules or code. |
| Performance | StrongCan ship only the code each page needs. Fast if built well, slow if not. | GoodGood hosting; marketing scripts can add weight. |
| Design freedom | UnlimitedNo template ceiling. The brand and budget set the limits. | FlexibleCustom themes possible with a developer. |
| E-commerce | GoodCustom storefronts are possible; often paired with Shopify for checkout. | BasicPayment links and quotes, not a full online store. |
| Maintenance burden | MinimalA static site has no plugins or database to patch, though dependencies and the domain still need care. | MinimalManaged. |
| Learning curve | GentleYou don’t build it. Editing depends on whether a CMS is included. | ModerateThe HubSpot ecosystem takes time to learn. |
| Pricing model | A project fee up front, then optional ongoing care. Static hosting itself tends to cost very little. | Tiered subscription, often bundled with other HubSpot hubs; costs scale with tier and seats. |
| Day-to-day editing | Text and images through a simple CMS if one is set up, otherwise a quick request to the developer. | HubSpot’s drag-and-drop page editor. |
Which one suits you
Choose Custom website if…
- you don’t use HubSpot for anything else
- you want to keep long-term software costs low
- you want templates and code that aren’t tied to one vendor
Choose HubSpot CMS if…
- your CRM, email and reporting are already in HubSpot
- marketers need to build landing pages without a developer
- you want every form submission to land on a contact record automatically
The difference that matters most
HubSpot’s real advantage is the shared database: a visitor fills in a form and their page views, emails and deal stage all sit together. For a growing B2B firm with a marketing team, that’s worth a lot.
A smaller engineering consultancy that gets a few enquiries a month doesn’t need it. A custom site can post forms to HubSpot’s free CRM or any other tool, with fewer marketing scripts adding page weight and without paying for seats. Check whether you’d use the platform or just the website.
Where each one leads
Counted from my ratings in the table above.
Custom website leads on ownership and portability, seo control, ai-search readiness, performance, design freedom, e-commerce and learning curve.
HubSpot CMS doesn’t clearly lead Custom website on any of the factors above.
Best fit for Custom website: established businesses whose website has to win work in a competitive market. Best fit for HubSpot CMS: companies already invested in HubSpot’s CRM.
Switching between them
Leaving HubSpot CMS, pages and blog content export, but themes and modules only run on HubSpot, so the design is rebuilt in code. Forms are recreated and pointed at your CRM. Keep the blog’s URL structure if you can, and redirect anything that moves.
Custom website vs HubSpot CMS, answered
Yes. Forms can submit straight into HubSpot’s CRM, and the tracking code can be added if you want it. You just aren’t hosting the site there.
It has solid controls and helpful on-page suggestions. Marketing scripts can add weight, so watch page speed as you add tools.
Custom website gives you more SEO control. Custom website: Tags, URLs, redirects and schema are all under your control. Rankings still depend on content and links. HubSpot CMS: Solid controls and guidance.
Custom website (fully yours): Everything, provided your contract gives you the code. The way I work, it lives in a repository you own. HubSpot CMS (partial): Pages and blog posts export as HTML; templates only run on HubSpot, so the design is rebuilt.
