Are AI website builders any good?

Short answerThey’re good at speed. An AI builder can produce a passable layout and placeholder copy in minutes, which is useful for testing an idea or getting a basic presence live. They struggle with originality, accurate specific copy and strategy. Most results look and read alike, which makes standing out against competitors hard.

What they do well

Give an AI builder your business type and location and it will generate pages, a colour palette, stock images and draft copy. For a pop-up, a side project or a first presence while you work out your offer, that’s genuinely useful. It removes the blank-page problem and gets you to something you can edit. Many traditional builders like Wix and GoDaddy now include AI features for this reason.

They’re also handy for exploring layout ideas before briefing a designer, since you can generate several directions in an afternoon.

Where they fall short

  • Generic copy. Text is built from patterns, so it sounds like every other business in your category.
  • Factual errors. Services, credentials or locations can be invented or wrong.
  • Sameness. Layouts follow common templates, so you look interchangeable.
  • No strategy. They don’t plan pages around how your customers search.

Google doesn’t penalise content for being AI-assisted, but it does reward helpful, original pages and signals of experience. Generic copy rarely provides either.

For a regulated profession, an invented claim could also create real trouble.

Using one sensibly

Treat the output as a first draft. Rewrite every headline in your own words, replace stock photos with real ones, check every fact, and split services into their own pages. Then it can serve you well for a while. The AI builders vs custom comparison and our article on problems with AI-generated websites cover the trade-offs further.

Also check the basics a generator may skip: unique page titles, a working contact form, your real address and hours, and how the site performs on a phone. Those details decide whether it actually brings in work.

What I’d do

Nick Lovett, founder of Tavro

I think AI builders are a reasonable way to get a placeholder online while you figure out the business. I wouldn’t rely on one where trust is the product: a clinic, a law office or a contractor taking big jobs. If I were using one, I’d rewrite all the copy myself, from what customers actually ask, and swap every stock image for a real photo. That’s where the difference lies. The AI saves time on layout, but the content still has to come from you.

FAQ

Follow-up questions

  1. Not for using AI as such. It favours helpful, original content, which generic AI copy often isn’t.

  2. Yes. Most AI builders produce a normal editable site on their platform once the draft is generated.

  3. Many have free trials or limited free tiers. Publishing on your own domain usually needs a paid subscription.
