Framer vs Wix
Framer suits designers and startups who care most about how the site looks and moves. Wix suits owners who want to build it themselves and need practical extras like bookings, stores and forms. Both keep editing on their own platform, so neither is very portable.

Side by side
Ratings are my own assessment for a typical small business, as of October 2026. Platforms change their features and plans often, so check the vendor’s current documentation before you decide.
| Framer | Wix | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A design-first builder with motion built in, loved by designers and startups. | The all-in-one drag-and-drop builder with an app for everything. |
| Ownership and portability | PartialFramer says the published HTML, CSS and JavaScript can be downloaded and hosted elsewhere; editing stays in Framer. | Platform-onlyYour content is yours, and some data exports as CSV, but the site itself can’t leave Wix. |
| SEO control | StrongMeta fields, sitemaps and redirects are covered. | StrongTitles, redirects, robots.txt and custom structured data are all editable. |
| AI-search readiness | MixedPages render as HTML; schema and entity work are manual. | GoodPages are server-rendered and some page types get structured data automatically; custom markup is possible. |
| Performance | GoodGood on lean pages; animation adds weight. | VariesMuch improved, though in my testing mobile pages often carry more script than lean sites. |
| Design freedom | UnlimitedVery high freedom for a designer. | FlexibleFreeform canvas; Wix Studio adds more responsive control. |
| E-commerce | Not built inNo built-in checkout; plugins and third-party embeds fill the gap. | GoodGood for small catalogues and bookings. |
| Maintenance burden | MinimalFully managed. | MinimalWix handles hosting, updates and security. |
| Learning curve | GentleEasy for designers, less so for everyone else. | EasyDrag, drop, publish. |
| Pricing model | Per-site subscription; CMS limits, locales and bandwidth scale by plan. | Monthly or yearly subscription. Paid plans remove Wix ads and connect your domain; some apps add their own fees. |
| Day-to-day editing | The Framer canvas, with an on-page editor for content. | The Wix editor in the browser, or the Wix app on a phone. |
Which one suits you
Choose Framer if…
- a polished, animated design is the priority
- a designer will build and maintain the site
- you don’t need bookings or e-commerce
Choose Wix if…
- you need bookings, a store or a members area
- you want to build it yourself without design experience
- you’d like to edit from a phone app
The difference that matters most
Framer is a design tool that publishes websites. Wix is a business tool that builds websites. Framer gives you breakpoints and motion; Wix gives you an app market.
A brand studio showing off its work is a natural fit for Framer. A Calgary hair salon that needs online bookings, gift cards and a simple shop gets more from Wix without having to bolt anything on.
Where each one leads
Counted from my ratings in the table above.
Framer leads on ownership and portability, performance and design freedom.
Wix leads on ai-search readiness, e-commerce and learning curve.
Best fit for Framer: startups and product launches that need a sharp site quickly. Best fit for Wix: owners who want to build and edit a site themselves, quickly.
Switching between them
Neither exports editable pages. Framer exports CMS content through plugins; Wix exports some data as CSV. Rebuild layouts on the new platform, re-create forms and bookings, and redirect any URLs that change.
Framer vs Wix, answered
Lean Framer pages generally perform well; heavy animation adds weight. Wix has improved a lot. On both, results depend mostly on how heavy each page is.
Wix, for most owners. Framer is easy for designers and slower for everyone else.
They’re roughly level on SEO control. Framer: Meta fields, sitemaps and redirects are covered. Wix: Titles, redirects, robots.txt and custom structured data are all editable.
Framer (partial): Published site files can be downloaded, and CMS content exports as CSV or JSON through plugins. The editable project stays in Framer. Wix (platform-only): Contacts, store products and CMS collections export as CSV; blog posts usually move with a migration tool or by hand. The design and pages have to be rebuilt.
