Squarespace vs Wix
Choose Squarespace if you want polished design with less effort and fewer ways to go wrong. Choose Wix if you want more freedom to arrange things, a bigger app market and more SEO settings to adjust. Both are good, both are hard to leave, and the better one is whichever matches how you like to work.

Side by side
Ratings are my own assessment for a typical small business, as of October 2026. Platforms change their features and plans often, so check the vendor’s current documentation before you decide.

Which one suits you
Choose Squarespace if…
- you want templates that look refined out of the box
- you prefer structure that keeps pages tidy on every screen
- you like having commerce, scheduling and email in one subscription
Choose Wix if…
- you want to drag elements anywhere on the page
- you need specific apps for bookings, events or memberships
- you want editable robots.txt and more technical SEO settings
The difference that matters most
Squarespace guards your design; Wix trusts you with it. Squarespace’s section-based editor keeps spacing and type consistent, which is why so many Squarespace sites look good with little effort. Wix’s freeform canvas lets you place anything anywhere, which is liberating and also means checking layouts on unusual screen sizes.
A Calgary florist who wants a beautiful site in a weekend leans Squarespace. A gym owner who needs class schedules, memberships and a member area leans Wix. On SEO, Wix now offers more control, including robots.txt editing, though neither will make up for thin content.
Where each one leads
Counted from my ratings in the table above.
Squarespace leads on ownership and portability.
Wix leads on seo control and ai-search readiness.
Best fit for Squarespace: creatives, studios and small brands that want a good-looking site quickly. Best fit for Wix: owners who want to build and edit a site themselves, quickly.
Switching between them
Neither imports the other’s site. Squarespace can export some pages, galleries and one blog in WordPress format, and Wix exports some data as CSV, but layouts are rebuilt by hand either way. Both have redirect tools, so add 301 redirects on the platform you’re moving to before you switch the domain.
Squarespace vs Wix, answered
Both are easy. Squarespace is harder to make look bad; Wix is quicker to bend into exactly what you want. Most people are comfortable with either within a few days.
Wix Bookings is generally more flexible for staff, classes and services. Squarespace Scheduling is clean and works well for appointment-based businesses.
Wix gives you more SEO control. Squarespace: Good defaults and editable titles, descriptions and redirects; less advanced control. Wix: Titles, redirects, robots.txt and custom structured data are all editable.
Squarespace (partial): Some pages, galleries and one blog export in WordPress format, and products export separately as CSV. Layouts, styling and code don’t. Wix (platform-only): Contacts, store products and CMS collections export as CSV; blog posts usually move with a migration tool or by hand. The design and pages have to be rebuilt.
