Shopify vs Wix
If selling online is the core of the business, choose Shopify; its checkout and order tools are built for growth. If you’re a service business selling a few products, gift cards or bookings on the side, Wix covers that well and is easier to run as a whole website. Look at what most of your visitors come to do.

Side by side
Ratings are my own assessment for a typical small business, as of October 2026. Platforms change their features and plans often, so check the vendor’s current documentation before you decide.
| Shopify | Wix | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | The hosted commerce platform most small and mid-size stores should start with. | The all-in-one drag-and-drop builder with an app for everything. |
| Ownership and portability | PartialProducts, customers and orders export; the theme only runs on Shopify. | Platform-onlyYour content is yours, and some data exports as CSV, but the site itself can’t leave Wix. |
| SEO control | StrongSolid for product SEO; URL structure is fixed. | StrongTitles, redirects, robots.txt and custom structured data are all editable. |
| AI-search readiness | GoodProduct schema in most themes; content pages are simpler. | GoodPages are server-rendered and some page types get structured data automatically; custom markup is possible. |
| Performance | GoodA fast platform; heavy app use is the usual cause of slow stores. | VariesMuch improved, though in my testing mobile pages often carry more script than lean sites. |
| Design freedom | FlexibleThemes plus Liquid; headless for full freedom. | FlexibleFreeform canvas; Wix Studio adds more responsive control. |
| E-commerce | SpecialistThe reason to choose it. | GoodGood for small catalogues and bookings. |
| Maintenance burden | LightPlatform managed; app and theme updates need watching. | MinimalWix handles hosting, updates and security. |
| Learning curve | GentleStraightforward admin; good stores take skill. | EasyDrag, drop, publish. |
| Pricing model | Monthly plan plus payment processing fees; most stores add paid apps on top. | Monthly or yearly subscription. Paid plans remove Wix ads and connect your domain; some apps add their own fees. |
| Day-to-day editing | The Shopify admin and theme editor. | The Wix editor in the browser, or the Wix app on a phone. |
Which one suits you
Choose Shopify if…
- products are the business, not an add-on
- you’re planning for larger catalogues, wholesale or multi-channel sales
- you want the deepest app and theme ecosystem for a store
Choose Wix if…
- bookings, classes or services are the main thing you sell
- the store is a handful of products alongside a broader site
- you want to drag and drop your own layouts
The difference that matters most
Both sell. The question is what else the site has to do. Wix is better at the whole website: freeform design, bookings, events and a store in one place. Shopify is better at selling: deeper checkout, inventory and fulfilment, plus apps for almost anything a store needs.
A Calgary pilates studio selling class packs and a few branded items fits Wix. A home goods shop doing most of its revenue online fits Shopify. If you’re in between, think about where you’ll be in two years. Switching later means rebuilding either way, though Shopify at least lets your product data leave cleanly, which limits lock-in.
Where each one leads
Counted from my ratings in the table above.
Shopify leads on ownership and portability, performance and e-commerce.
Wix leads on maintenance burden and learning curve.
Best fit for Shopify: any business where online sales are the main job of the site. Best fit for Wix: owners who want to build and edit a site themselves, quickly.
Switching between them
From Wix to Shopify, export products to CSV and import them, then rebuild pages on a Shopify theme; Wix blog posts can be exported and recreated. Shopify’s product and collection URLs follow a fixed pattern, so map old Wix URLs with 301 redirects in Shopify’s admin. From Shopify to Wix, products and customers export as CSV and the design is rebuilt.
Shopify vs Wix, answered
For small catalogues and service-led businesses, yes. It handles products, payments and shipping. Shopify pulls ahead once the store becomes the main job of the site.
Wix is easier for the website as a whole. Shopify is easier for setting up a proper store, since that’s what it’s built for.
They’re roughly level on SEO control. Shopify: Solid for product SEO; URL structure is fixed. Wix: Titles, redirects, robots.txt and custom structured data are all editable.
Shopify (partial): Products, customers and orders as CSV; the theme has to be rebuilt elsewhere. Wix (platform-only): Contacts, store products and CMS collections export as CSV; blog posts usually move with a migration tool or by hand. The design and pages have to be rebuilt.
