GoDaddy Website Builder vs Shopify

If the site’s job is to sell products online, choose Shopify, even for a small catalogue. GoDaddy’s builder is for getting contact details and a services list up quickly, and its store is an add-on rather than the point. They overlap far less than their marketing suggests.

Which one suits you

Choose GoDaddy Website Builder if…

  • you need a basic page with hours, services and a phone number up today
  • your domain is already at GoDaddy and you want one bill and one login
  • you sell nothing online and don’t plan to

Choose Shopify if…

  • online orders are how the business makes money
  • you need inventory, shipping rates and taxes handled properly
  • you expect the catalogue to grow past a handful of items

The difference that matters most

Checkout is the dividing line. Shopify’s whole platform is built around taking payment, tracking stock and getting orders out the door. GoDaddy’s builder can bolt on a basic store on higher plans, but it was designed for a simple brochure site.

Picture a Red Deer coffee roaster selling twelve bean varieties in two bag sizes, shipping across Canada. On Shopify, variants, shipping zones and sales tax are settings. On a simpler builder store, they can take workarounds. A Calgary plumber who just needs a call button has the opposite problem: on Shopify he’d be paying for machinery he never uses.

Where each one leads

Counted from my ratings in the table above.

GoDaddy Website Builder leads on maintenance burden and learning curve.

Shopify leads on ownership and portability, seo control, ai-search readiness, performance, design freedom and e-commerce.

Best fit for GoDaddy Website Builder: getting a basic presence online the same day. Best fit for Shopify: any business where online sales are the main job of the site.

Switching between them

Going from GoDaddy to Shopify means rebuilding. GoDaddy’s builder has no built-in export, so pages are copied by hand and products are entered fresh or loaded from a spreadsheet through Shopify’s CSV importer. The domain can stay registered at GoDaddy and simply point to Shopify. Because Shopify uses fixed paths like /products/ and /pages/, set up 301 redirects in Shopify’s admin for every old URL that had traffic or links.

FAQ

GoDaddy Website Builder vs Shopify, answered

  1. Yes. You can leave the domain registered at GoDaddy and change its DNS records to point at Shopify. Many stores run that way, and transferring the domain is optional.

  2. For a handful of items with simple shipping, it can work. Once you need variants, inventory tracking across channels or more than basic shipping rules, it gets awkward and Shopify becomes the easier tool.

  3. Shopify gives you more SEO control. GoDaddy Website Builder: Covers the basics, like page titles and descriptions; fewer advanced settings. Shopify: Solid for product SEO; URL structure is fixed.

  4. GoDaddy Website Builder (platform-only): No built-in site export. Plan to copy content by hand. Shopify (partial): Products, customers and orders as CSV; the theme has to be rebuilt elsewhere.
