Consulting firms should use ProfessionalService, the schema.org LocalBusiness subtype for professional firms. Fill in the form and I’ll build valid JSON-LD you can paste into your site’s head.

The properties that matter for consultants
Type: ProfessionalService. Every property below is a real schema.org property.
| Property | Why it matters |
|---|---|
knowsAbout | “Consultant” on its own means very little. knowsAbout is where you tell search tools and AI exactly what you’re expert in. |
description | Name the type of client and problem in one sentence. AI tools quote this when someone asks for a recommendation. |
areaServed | Most consultancies serve a region or a country. Say so, so you aren’t read as a neighbourhood business. |
sameAs | LinkedIn is where people check consultants. Linking it helps tie your profiles to one entity. |
Common mistakes
Writing a vague description like “unlocking potential”. Search tools can’t match that to anything.
Listing every buzzword in knowsAbout. Keep it to what you’d actually be hired for.
Adding a priceRange when you price by project. It tells people little and can mislead.
How to add it to your site
- Replace every example value in the form with your own details. They should match your Google Business Profile exactly.
- Copy the code and paste it into your page’s
<head>. Most site builders have a custom code field. On a hand-built site, it goes in the template. - Test the live page with Google’s Rich Results Test and validator.schema.org, and fix anything they flag.
- Add the same facts to the visible page. Structured data should describe what visitors can see. My website checklist for consultants covers the rest.
Schema for consultants: questions
If you have an office or serve a defined region, ProfessionalService. It inherits LocalBusiness properties like address and hours. Organization suits firms with no local presence at all.
No. It works through what it inherits from LocalBusiness and Organization. The value is in choosing the type and filling knowsAbout and the description well.
Article markup on case study pages is reasonable. Keep the business schema about the firm, and let case studies do the persuading on the page.
