Why it matters

Many people now ask an AI tool for a recommendation before they search. Those tools build answers from pages they can read and trust, and they cite the sources they use.

Being cited isn’t magic, and nobody can guarantee it. It mostly comes down to basics done well: crawlers allowed in, content rendered as real HTML, clear answers in plain words, consistent facts about your business across the web, and structured data that removes guesswork.

This checklist covers the parts you control. The weighting is my judgement of what matters most, based on how these tools fetch and read pages.

Good to know

  • Rendering matters

Some AI crawlers don’t run JavaScript. If your content only appears after scripts load, they may see an empty page.

  • Consistency is trust

If your hours, address or services differ between your site, Google and directories, tools have to guess which is right.

  • Answer like a person

A page that answers a question in its first two sentences is far easier to quote than one that builds up to it.

FAQ

AI visibility checklist: questions

  1. Make sure its crawlers can reach your site, publish clear pages that answer the questions your customers ask, keep your business details consistent everywhere, and earn mentions on other reputable sites. There is no form to submit and no guarantee.

  2. GEO, also called answer engine optimisation, is the practice of making content easy for AI search tools to find, understand and cite. Much of it overlaps with good SEO.

  3. Some do and some don’t. Serving real HTML, through static generation or server rendering, is the safest way to make sure every tool sees your content.

  4. It helps by stating facts in a format that leaves no room for misreading. It is one signal among many, not a switch.
