llms.txt generator

This tool writes an llms.txt file: a short markdown file at the root of your site that tells AI tools who you are and which pages matter most. Fill in your summary and key links, then download the file and upload it next to robots.txt.

What you do, for whom and where. Facts, not slogans.
Plain markdown: short bullet points work well.
One per line: Title | URL | short note (note optional).
Secondary pages AI tools can skip when short on space.

How to use it

  1. Write your business name and a one-sentence summary of what you do and for whom.

  2. Add a few plain facts: where you are, who you serve, how to contact you.

  3. List your key pages, one per line, as “Title | URL | short note”.

  4. Download llms.txt and upload it to your domain root, so it loads at /llms.txt.

Why it matters

llms.txt is a proposed standard from llmstxt.org. The idea is simple: give language models a short, clean, markdown summary of your site instead of making them dig through menus, cookie banners and scripts.

It is still a proposal, and not every AI tool reads it yet. I add one to every site I build anyway, because it costs nothing, it forces a clear one-sentence description of the business, and it gives AI tools an unambiguous list of the pages worth citing.

The format is fixed: a title, a short summary in a quote block, optional detail, then sections of links. This generator follows it exactly.

Good to know

  • Write it like a briefing

Facts, not slogans. “A Calgary physiotherapy clinic that direct bills most insurers” beats “Your journey to wellness”.

  • Keep it short

A focused file with your ten most useful pages is better than a dump of every URL. That is what your sitemap is for.

  • Optional section

Links under a heading called “Optional” can be skipped when a tool needs a shorter context. Put secondary pages there.

FAQ

Llms.txt generator: questions

  1. A markdown file at the root of a website that summarises the site and links to its most important pages for large language models. It was proposed at llmstxt.org in 2024.

  2. Support varies and changes, and none of the major companies has committed to it as a ranking signal. I treat it as a low-cost, helpful extra rather than a guarantee.

  3. No. Robots.txt tells crawlers what they may read. llms.txt tells AI tools what your site is and where the best content is. Most sites benefit from both.

  4. To the root of your domain, next to robots.txt, so it loads at yourdomain.ca/llms.txt. On most hosts you can drop it in the public folder.
