The properties that matter for engineering firms

Type: ProfessionalService. Every property below is a real schema.org property.

Key schema properties for engineering firms
PropertyWhy it matters
knowsAboutEngineering is many professions. Structural, geotechnical and mechanical are different searches. Be specific.
areaServedPermits and stamps are provincial. List where you’re registered to practise and where you take projects.
descriptionSay the disciplines and sectors in one sentence. Procurement teams and AI tools both look for that.
naicsUseful for procurement and directories. Use the code from your own registration.

Common mistakes

  • Using Organization alone for a firm with a real office. ProfessionalService carries local business details too.

  • Listing projects as knowsAbout. Projects belong on portfolio pages. knowsAbout is for disciplines.

  • Leaving areaServed out. A firm that works province-wide looks like a single-office business without it.

How to add it to your site

  1. Replace every example value in the form with your own details. They should match your Google Business Profile exactly.
  2. Copy the code and paste it into your page’s <head>. Most site builders have a custom code field. On a hand-built site, it goes in the template.
  3. Test the live page with Google’s Rich Results Test and validator.schema.org, and fix anything they flag.
  4. Add the same facts to the visible page. Structured data should describe what visitors can see. My website checklist for engineering firms covers the rest.
FAQ

Schema for engineering firms: questions

  1. ProfessionalService. schema.org has no engineering firm type, and ProfessionalService carries the right local business properties.

  2. You can use CreativeWork or Article markup on project pages, though the gain is modest. The business schema stays about the firm.

  3. There’s no clean schema.org property for it on a business. I keep it visible in the footer, where clients and search tools can both see it.
