The properties that matter for IT and managed service providers

Type: ProfessionalService. Every property below is a real schema.org property.

Key schema properties for IT and managed service providers
PropertyWhy it matters
knowsAboutManaged support, cybersecurity and cloud migrations are different searches. Listing them helps search tools match you.
areaServedOn-site support has a radius. List the cities you’ll actually drive to.
openingHoursBusiness hours and after-hours support are different things. Mark up office hours and explain support coverage on the page.
descriptionName the type of client, like small offices or clinics. AI tools use that to recommend you for the right question.

Common mistakes

  • Using Organization alone when you serve local businesses on-site. ProfessionalService keeps the local details.

  • Implying 24/7 hours in openingHours when you mean 24/7 monitoring. Mark up when the office is open.

  • Listing every vendor you’ve touched in knowsAbout. Keep it to services you sell.

How to add it to your site

  1. Replace every example value in the form with your own details. They should match your Google Business Profile exactly.
  2. Copy the code and paste it into your page’s <head>. Most site builders have a custom code field. On a hand-built site, it goes in the template.
  3. Test the live page with Google’s Rich Results Test and validator.schema.org, and fix anything they flag.
  4. Add the same facts to the visible page. Structured data should describe what visitors can see. My website checklist for IT and managed service providers covers the rest.
FAQ

Schema for IT and managed service providers: questions

  1. Not a specific one. ProfessionalService fits most local IT providers. A software-only company with no local presence might suit Organization better.

  2. openingHours describes when the business is open. I keep it to office hours and explain support coverage in the page text. It avoids sending people to a closed door.

  3. Only on a pricing page with fixed, published prices. Otherwise I leave plans as visible content.
