The properties that matter for optometrists
Type: Optician. Every property below is a real schema.org property.
| Property | Why it matters |
|---|---|
@type | Optician is the closest specific type schema.org offers. It tells search tools this is an eye care business, not a general clinic. |
knowsAbout | Optician leans toward eyewear, so knowsAbout is where you make the exam side clear: eye exams, dry eye, myopia management. |
description | Lead with “optometry clinic” or “eye exams”. It makes the clinical side unmistakable. |
openingHours | Saturday exam slots are often a deciding factor for families. Keep hours accurate. |
paymentAccepted | Vision plan direct billing is a common question. Answer it in the markup and on the page. |
Common mistakes
Using MedicalClinic because Optician sounds like it only covers glasses. Optician is the more specific and accurate type.
Adding isAcceptingNewPatients. It isn’t defined on Optician, so I leave it out and say it on the page.
Listing eyewear brands as knowsAbout. Keep that for services. Brands belong on the visible eyewear page.
How to add it to your site
- Replace every example value in the form with your own details. They should match your Google Business Profile exactly.
- Copy the code and paste it into your page’s
<head>. Most site builders have a custom code field. On a hand-built site, it goes in the template. - Test the live page with Google’s Rich Results Test and validator.schema.org, and fix anything they flag.
- Add the same facts to the visible page. Structured data should describe what visitors can see. My website checklist for optometrists covers the rest.
Schema for optometrists: questions
schema.org has no Optometrist business type. Optician is the MedicalBusiness subtype for eye care, so it’s the closest fit. I make the exam side clear with knowsAbout and the description.
On their own bio pages, yes, as Person. The clinic schema stays about the clinic. That keeps the entities clean.
Product markup suits pages that actually sell a specific item with a price. For a frame gallery with no prices, I leave it as visible content.
