Website checklist for accountants and CPA firms

A good accounting firm website tells a business owner or family whether you handle their kind of work, how you charge, and how to get started before the next deadline. This checklist covers that and everything else I check on every CPA firm site.

What a firm website must get right first

Accounting clients choose by fit: the size of business, the industry and the type of work. The site should split personal tax from corporate work, show the industries you know, and explain how onboarding works. Deadlines drive demand, so make the start path obvious all year.

How to use this checklist

29 checks in 7 groups.

  1. Open your website in another tab and go group by group.

Tick an item only when you have checked it on the live site, on a phone as well as a computer.

  2. Start with content and conversion.

Those groups are the most specific to accountants and CPA firms, and they are where most enquiries are won or lost.

  3. Leave technical and AI search items for last.

They matter, but they are easier to fix in one pass, and the free tools linked below help with most of them.

  4. Your ticks are saved in this browser.

Come back any time. Print it if you want to work through it with your team.

A note on compliance

Your website can count as advertising under the rules that apply to accountants and CPA firms. The compliance items here are prompts to check, not legal advice. Rules differ by province and change over time, so read the current standards from your regulator or licensing body before you publish testimonials, comparisons, prices or outcome claims.

FAQ

Accountants and CPA firms websites: questions

  1. Not always exact prices, but explain how you price and what drives cost. Owners want to know whether you bill fixed monthly or hourly. That alone filters out poor fits.

  2. Yes. A dental practice owner trusts the firm that understands dental clinics. Industry pages can also rank for searches like accountant for contractors, which are hard to win with a general page.

  3. Through a secure client portal linked from your site. Website forms and email aren't the right place for tax documents. Make the portal link easy to find in the header.
