SERP preview tool

Type a page title and meta description to see roughly how Google will show them on desktop and mobile. The tool measures pixel width, not just characters, because that is how Google decides where to cut text off.

How to use it

  1. Paste the page’s URL, title and meta description.

  2. Watch the width bars. Amber means the end of your text may be cut off.

  3. Switch between desktop and mobile to check both.

  4. Put the most important words first, then copy the tags into your page.

Why it matters

Your title and description are the first thing a searcher reads, before your site, your photos or your reviews. A title cut off mid-word or a description that trails into an ellipsis looks careless at exactly the wrong moment.

Google truncates by pixel width, so a title full of wide letters like W and M is cut sooner than one with narrow letters. Character counts are a rough guide only. This tool measures the text in a font close to Google’s, which is much closer to what you’ll see.

Google also rewrites titles and descriptions it thinks don’t match the page. The best defence is a title that honestly describes the page and a description that answers the searcher’s question.

Good to know

  • Approximate limits

I use about 580px for desktop titles and about 920px for desktop descriptions. Google doesn’t publish exact limits and changes them, so treat amber as “check this”, not “wrong”.

  • Keyword first

Lead with what the page is about. Your brand name can go at the end, where truncation matters least.

  • One page, one title

Every page needs its own title and description. Duplicates make it hard for Google to pick the right page.

FAQ

SERP preview tool: questions

  1. Short enough to fit roughly 580 pixels on desktop, which is often around 50 to 60 characters. Wide letters use more space, which is why I measure pixels here rather than counting characters.

  2. Aim for a description that fits roughly 920 pixels on desktop, often around 150 to 160 characters. Put the most useful part first, because mobile can show less.

  3. Google rewrites titles it thinks are too long, stuffed with keywords or don’t match the page. A clear, honest title that matches the H1 is the most likely to be shown as written.

  4. Google has said they are not a direct ranking factor. They do affect whether people click, and a clear one is often quoted by search and AI tools when they summarise a page.
