Shopify vs Webflow
For a business that lives on online sales, Shopify is the safer choice; in my view Webflow’s e-commerce suits small catalogues best. Webflow is the better pick for a content- or brand-led site where the store is secondary and a designer wants full control. Some brands run both: a Webflow marketing site and Shopify for the store.

Side by side
Ratings are my own assessment for a typical small business, as of October 2026. Platforms change their features and plans often, so check the vendor’s current documentation before you decide.
| Shopify | Webflow | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | The hosted commerce platform most small and mid-size stores should start with. | A visual tool that writes real HTML and CSS, for people who think like developers. |
| Ownership and portability | PartialProducts, customers and orders export; the theme only runs on Shopify. | PartialCode export on paid Workspace plans; CMS content exports only as CSV. |
| SEO control | StrongSolid for product SEO; URL structure is fixed. | ExtensiveFine-grained control over tags, redirects and markup. |
| AI-search readiness | GoodProduct schema in most themes; content pages are simpler. | GoodServer-rendered HTML; schema via custom code. |
| Performance | GoodA fast platform; heavy app use is the usual cause of slow stores. | GoodGenerally good; heavy interactions can cost speed. |
| Design freedom | FlexibleThemes plus Liquid; headless for full freedom. | UnlimitedClose to hand-built freedom for a skilled designer. |
| E-commerce | SpecialistThe reason to choose it. | BasicWorks for small catalogues; fewer advanced commerce features than a dedicated platform. |
| Maintenance burden | LightPlatform managed; app and theme updates need watching. | MinimalHosting and updates managed. |
| Learning curve | GentleStraightforward admin; good stores take skill. | SteepThink of it as learning web design. |
| Pricing model | Monthly plan plus payment processing fees; most stores add paid apps on top. | Per-site hosting plans plus workspace seats; CMS item counts and features scale by plan. |
| Day-to-day editing | The Shopify admin and theme editor. | The Webflow Editor for content, the Designer for layout. |
Which one suits you
Choose Shopify if…
- you have a growing catalogue, variants or subscriptions
- you need reliable checkout, taxes and shipping without custom work
- you’ll rely on apps for reviews, loyalty or fulfilment
Choose Webflow if…
- the site is mostly content, case studies or a brand story
- you sell a small number of products and design is a priority
- a designer on your team already works in Webflow
The difference that matters most
Webflow is the stronger design tool; Shopify is the stronger store. In Webflow, a designer controls every element and structures content in collections. In Shopify, layouts go through themes and Liquid, but checkout, inventory and order handling are among the strongest available.
A Calgary furniture maker selling a dozen made-to-order pieces with a strong brand story could be well served by Webflow. A sporting goods retailer with hundreds of products and stock across two locations needs Shopify. Shopify’s fixed URL patterns are worth knowing about before you commit to a content-heavy plan there.
Where each one leads
Counted from my ratings in the table above.
Shopify leads on e-commerce and learning curve.
Webflow leads on seo control, design freedom and maintenance burden.
Best fit for Shopify: any business where online sales are the main job of the site. Best fit for Webflow: marketing teams with a designer who knows web layout.
Switching between them
From Webflow to Shopify, products export from Webflow as CSV and can be reshaped for Shopify’s importer, but the design has to be rebuilt as a Shopify theme. From Shopify to Webflow, products and customers export cleanly and the storefront is rebuilt in Webflow’s Designer. URLs change in both directions, so set up 301 redirects on the new platform.
Shopify vs Webflow, answered
Yes. Shopify’s Buy Button or a headless setup lets a Webflow site sell through Shopify. It adds complexity, so it suits brands where design and commerce both matter a lot.
For a small catalogue with simple shipping, yes. It has fewer options for discounts, subscriptions and integrations than Shopify.
Webflow gives you more SEO control. Shopify: Solid for product SEO; URL structure is fixed. Webflow: Fine-grained control over tags, redirects and markup.
Shopify (partial): Products, customers and orders as CSV; the theme has to be rebuilt elsewhere. Webflow (partial): HTML, CSS and JavaScript on paid Workspace plans; CMS collections as CSV.
