Shopify vs Squarespace
If the store is the business and you expect to grow, Shopify is the better foundation. If you’re a creative or service business selling a modest catalogue alongside everything else, Squarespace’s commerce is often enough, and its templates make the rest of the site look better with less effort. The tipping point is usually catalogue size and order volume.

Side by side
Ratings are my own assessment for a typical small business, as of October 2026. Platforms change their features and plans often, so check the vendor’s current documentation before you decide.

Which one suits you
Choose Shopify if…
- online sales are the main job of the site
- you need advanced inventory, shipping rules or multi-channel selling
- you want access to a large ecosystem of commerce apps
Choose Squarespace if…
- you sell a few products or digital downloads next to a portfolio or services
- design polish matters more than commerce depth
- you want one subscription with scheduling and email built in
The difference that matters most
Shopify is a store that can have a website; Squarespace is a website that can have a store. That sounds glib, but it shows up everywhere: in my view Shopify’s checkout, order management and app market go deeper, while Squarespace’s content pages and templates are more refined.
A Calgary ceramicist selling twenty pieces a season alongside her portfolio and workshop bookings fits Squarespace well. A Kelowna supplement brand with subscriptions, wholesale pricing and hundreds of SKUs needs Shopify. Shopify’s content pages are basic, so a content-heavy brand there should plan its information architecture carefully.
Where each one leads
Counted from my ratings in the table above.
Shopify leads on seo control, ai-search readiness, performance and e-commerce.
Squarespace leads on maintenance burden and learning curve.
Best fit for Shopify: any business where online sales are the main job of the site. Best fit for Squarespace: creatives, studios and small brands that want a good-looking site quickly.
Switching between them
Moving from Squarespace to Shopify, the catalogue comes over by CSV or Shopify’s import tools, but layouts and styling are rebuilt in a Shopify theme, and pages and blog posts are imported or recreated. Shopify’s fixed /products/ and /collections/ URLs mean nearly every old address changes, so add 301 redirects in Shopify’s admin for all of them. Shopify to Squarespace works the same way in reverse.
Shopify vs Squarespace, answered
Depending on the plan, Squarespace may add its own transaction fee on top of payment processing. Check the current plan details, since they change.
Yes, with a good theme and good photography. Out of the box, Squarespace templates tend to look more polished; Shopify needs more care on the pages that aren’t products.
Shopify gives you more SEO control. Shopify: Solid for product SEO; URL structure is fixed. Squarespace: Good defaults and editable titles, descriptions and redirects; less advanced control.
Shopify (partial): Products, customers and orders as CSV; the theme has to be rebuilt elsewhere. Squarespace (partial): Some pages, galleries and one blog export in WordPress format, and products export separately as CSV. Layouts, styling and code don’t.
