Is SEO dead because of AI search?
Short answerNo. AI search changes how results look and reduces clicks on some simple questions, but AI tools still pull their answers from web pages, and Google search is still where many customers start. The fundamentals of SEO, clear useful pages that can be crawled and trusted, are what AI search draws on too.
Is your site ready for AI search?
Send me your site and I’ll tell you how it holds up for both Google and AI assistants.
The longer answer
What has actually changed
Google now shows AI Overviews on many searches and offers a conversational AI Mode. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and others answer questions with summaries and source links. Some people now ask an assistant before they search.
For quick factual questions, that means fewer clicks: the answer is right there. That’s an acceleration of zero-click search, which was already happening with featured snippets and knowledge panels.
What hasn’t changed
AI answers have to come from somewhere. Google’s AI features draw on its index. Other assistants run web searches and read pages. If your site isn’t crawlable, clear and trusted, it isn’t in the pool either way.
And for decisions with real stakes, like choosing a lawyer, a dentist or a contractor for a basement development, people still want to look at the business, see the work, read reviews and make contact. AI can shortlist. The website still does the persuading.
Where to focus now
- Write pages that answer specific questions directly, with the detail an AI summary can’t replace.
- Make sure content is in the HTML, not dependent on JavaScript to appear.
- Strengthen your entity: consistent business details, a complete Google Business Profile, reviews and mentions.
- Measure enquiries, not just traffic. Fewer but better-informed visitors can be a good trade.
Some people call this AEO or GEO. In practice it overlaps heavily with good SEO.
What I’d do
Nick Lovett, founder of Tavro
I’ve changed how I write pages more than what I do technically. Every heading answers a real question and the first sentence under it gives the answer. That reads well for people, works for featured snippets and gives AI tools a clean passage to cite.
I also tell clients to judge their site by enquiries. If AI answers mean fewer casual visitors but the people who do arrive are ready to call, that’s not a loss.
Follow-up questions
No. The same work, clear content, technical health and a strong reputation, is what both Google and AI assistants rely on.
No one knows exactly how search will evolve. Google remains a major way people find local businesses, and that’s unlikely to vanish quickly.
Generative engine optimization means improving your chances of being cited in AI-generated answers. It builds on SEO rather than replacing it.
