What are AI citations?

An AI citation is a link or named source that an AI assistant or AI search feature shows alongside its answer, pointing to a page it drew from.

In plain English

Perplexity shows numbered sources. ChatGPT search shows inline links and a list of sources. Google’s AI features show link cards. In each case, the citation points to a page the system retrieved and found useful for a specific claim in its answer.

A citation isn’t the same as a mention. An assistant might name your business without linking to you, or cite a directory page about you instead of your own site. Both count for visibility, but only one sends visitors to pages you control.

Why it matters for a small business

Traffic from citations is usually small but tends to be well informed, since the person has already read a summary. It appears in analytics as referrals from sites like chatgpt.com or perplexity.ai, and ChatGPT often adds a utm_source tag to its links, which makes it easier to spot.

An example

A Calgary immigration consultancy sets up a custom channel group in GA4 for AI referrals. It finds that most of those visits land on one page: a clear, dated explanation of a specific application step, with sources linked. That tells the consultancy which kind of page earns citations, so it writes more like it. (More for immigration consultants.)

Common mistakes

Where I see AI citations go wrong most often.

  1. Trusting a citation-tracking tool as complete, when these tools sample a limited set of prompts.

  2. Chasing citations on broad topics unrelated to your services, which brings visitors who will never hire you.

  3. Leaving AI referrals lumped in with general referral traffic, so you can’t see the trend.

FAQ

AI citations, answered

  1. Check analytics for referrals from AI domains, and ask the tools directly about topics you cover. Results vary, so check a range of questions over time.

  2. Pages that answer a specific question clearly and early, with facts that are easy to verify. Vague marketing pages rarely get chosen.
